SA: Maftown Heights festival announces return with confirmed date
The organisers of Maftown Heights have officially announced the return of the festival, set to take place at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg, South Africa on 29 November.
This year’s event promises a line-up that pays tribute to its legacy while shaping the future of African music. It will spotlight a highly anticipated reunion of motswako pioneers and trailblazers, while also introducing NuTswako artists who are continuing the evolution of the motswako sound. Maglera Doe Boy will lead as the festival curator, alongside co-founder and renowned motswako artist Khuli Chana.
Festival-goers can look forward to an electrifying fusion of music, fashion, and food. The unique motswako spirit will come alive not only through the performances but also through various experiences designed to celebrate the festival’s values of unity, originality, and creative expression.
“We are thrilled to return with a reunion edition of Maftown Heights,” said festival co-founders Khuli Chana and Refiloe Ramogase in a joint statement. “Maftown Heights is more than just a festival; it’s a movement that continues to inspire and shape youth culture in South Africa. This reunion is our way of reflecting on the journey of motswako and celebrating the new wave of talent that keeps the culture alive.”
Known for uniting fans of hip hop, motswako, and local urban culture, this year’s Maftown Heights will not only celebrate music but also pay homage to the rich cultural heritage of motswako. Since its inception, the festival has become a cultural landmark, providing a platform for South Africa’s finest talent, including the late HHP, AKA, and Riky Rick.
In June, Maftown Heights also premiered a four-part hip hop documentary series titled Maftown Heights Untold Stories. The series delves into the origins and rise of motswako, offering an intimate look at the artists, moments, and cultural movements that have shaped Maftown Heights into one of South Africa’s most iconic music festivals.
