SA mourns Afrikaans rapper Angie Oeh
The South African music industry and local fans are mourning the death of local Afrikaans rapper Angie Oeh who died of cancer on 19 August at the age of 24.
Angie Oeh’s began her fight against cancer in 2022, when a tumour was removed from her back. According to local media, she complained of side pains two months ago and was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer on Monday last week. She died at Life Wilgers Hospital in the capital Pretoria.
News of her passing was confirmed by her manager and Fokofpolisiekar bassist, Wynand Myburgh, who shared a picture of him and Angie Oeh with the caption: “RIP my beautiful baby girl.”
Prior to her death, Angie Oeh posted on social media that she needed R200 000 ($10 500) for medical expenses. Myburgh and others created a BackaBuddy campaign where they raised R278 000.
“It is very sad and very terrible to lose Angie at such a young age,” Myburgh told local media. “Those who met her or have worked with her will know how wonderful and special she was. We are not only losing a South African gem, but also a very special friend and partner.”
Music professional Gareth Wilson wrote on social media: “Tragedy has struck our industry and broken all of our hearts and despite a few haters caught up in their own bitterness, we all wanted to see you shine and boy did we. You can rest easy knowing that you used the little time you had to make a massive impact on so many lives and stood up for what you believed in. Long may you run Angie Oeh.”
Rebelution Music and Media founder and CEO Celestè Mitchell said: “Rest in peace you beautiful soul. Your memory will live on through your music.”
Born Angelique Eurika Greeff, Angie Oeh collaborated with artists such as Jack Parow, Van Pletzen, Loufi, Biggy and producer DJ Kay Faith. Some of her songs include ‘Dis Jou Wyfie’, ‘Te Sexxy’, ‘Sex in Afrikaans’, ‘Die Lewe is 'n Lied’ and ‘Altyd Op My Vibe’.
