SA: Sho Madjozi and Vusi Mahlasela to headline Folklore Festival on 16 September
South African artists Sho Madjozi and Vusi Mahlasela will headline the second edition of Folklore Festival at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 16 September.
The event, which is the brainchild of local musician Pilani Bubu, seeks to celebrate African identity, culture, customs and heritage. Sho Madjozi and Vusi Mahlasela will be joined by Thandeka Mfinyongo (SA), Ancient Voices (SA), Makadem (Kenya) featuring Eddie Grey (Kenya), Josh Meck (Zimbabwe) and DJ Nicky B (SA).
“In the heart of our collective existence lies a vibrant tapestry of human expression known as Folklore,” Folklore Festival founder and festival director Pilani Bubu said. “It weaves together the soulful essence of a people, an intricate web of traditional wisdom, customs and captivating tales cherished by generations past.
“This festival prides itself in being a conduit for inter-generational dialogue, indigenous knowledge sharing and the important documentation and preservation of African folklore as it re-defines itself through time, instilling a stronger sense of identity in ourselves as Africans.”
Folklore Festival will take place over South Africa’s Heritage Month and will feature pan-African music, literature, crafts, food, traditional dances, workshops, a book fair and a kids’ area with drumming circles.
National School of the Arts artistic director Brenda Sakellarides said: “The professionals that come to the fore in the planning and execution of this unique and remarkable festival present the perfect role models for our young artists. Quantifying the value of their professional exchange with the NSA community is impossible. The NSA benefits significantly from the association with their excellence and high-frequency artistry.”
Bubu added: “We are honoured to continue our relationship with the National School of the Arts as our venue partner. Folklore Festival 2023 is proud to announce its sponsors Mzansi Golden Economy, supported by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture as well as the National Arts Council, both through the Presidential Employment Stimulus (PESP4).”
Tickets to the festival can be obtained here, with a 50% discount lasting until 16 August.
