SA: Thandiswa Mazwai to perform at the Lyric Theatre in Joburg
South African musician Thandiswa Mazwai is set to perform at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg on 25 August.
With her new album Sankofa on the horizon, the show will feature a mix of her classic hits and fresh songs. The upcoming album features tracks recorded in New York and Dakar, produced by Meshell Ndegeocello and Nduduzo Makhathini, respectively.
Speaking about the show, Mazwai said: “I can’t wait to share some of my new music and experience the audience’s reaction. Sankofa is about fetching what has been left behind and the making of this work has really embodied that idea. I can’t wait for people to hear what we have been working on. It is sensitive and lush while at the same time very powerful to me.”
Mazwai’s musical legacy is undeniable. She began singing with kwaito group Bongo Muffin before going solo, making waves with albums like Zabalaza (2004), Ibokwe (2009) and Belede (2016), which attained gold status within weeks of their release.
Her global footprint is equally impressive, having graced prestigious stages worldwide, from the FIFA 2010 World Cup opening ceremony to the Apollo Theatre, Radio City Hall and Cannes Film Festival, and sharing the limelight with luminaries like Salif Keita, Hugh Masekela and Stevie Wonder.
