Samuel Brian crowned Red Bull Dance Your Style Kenya 2024 winner
The 2024 edition of the Red Bull Dance Your Style Kenya competition came to a close after a hotly contested finale this past weekend in Nairobi.
Samuel Brian emerged as the winner, with Pessa Vanessa coming second at the event held at SK8City on 10 August 2024. The contest drew a full house, with the audience composed of members of Kenya’s dance community, the media and fans who came to witness one of the biggest urban street dance competitions in the world.
After being crowned the champion, Samuel Brian of The Legitz crew said. “The competition was not just epic but it exceeded all my expectations. It shows the immense talent in Kenya’s dance industry and I applaud Red Bull Dance Your Style for setting the standard with every edition.”
Samuel Brian advised aspiring dancers to stay committed to the art form and keep practising diligently, saying: “There is no other way to succeed.”
This year’s edition of the competition began in March with an event that featured international Red Bull dancer and world champion Stalamuerte from Switzerland. This was followed by regional battles in four Kenyan cities: Eldoret, Mombasa, Kisumu and Nairobi.
The contests unearthed four regional winners who, together with selected wild cards from past qualifier events and online auditions, met in Nairobi for the ultimate challenge.
Samuel Brian will now represent Kenya in the world finals in Mumbai, India, where 51 countries will participate on 9 November 2024.
Red Bull Dance Your Style’s winner is selected through public voting after dancers’ creativity, freestyle and musical skills are put to the test in front of a live audience. All urban dance styles are welcome, except for breakdancing. A DJ plays unpredictable music to which the dancers must adapt, showcasing their moves and versatility in the hope of impressing the crowd. After each battle, the spectators hold up blue or red placards to choose the winner.
Red Bull Kenya, now in its fifth edition, aims to upskill local dance communities while exposing them to different levels of the international mixed-style dance competition.
