SA's Yvonne Chaka Chaka to play Botswana charity show
South African singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka will headline the Waar Was Jy Oldies event at Botswana Craft in Gaborone on 3 August. The concert, which is looking to raise 100 000 pula ($9 700), will channel a portion of the proceeds to the Botswana Society for the Deaf (BSD).
The ‘I’m Burning Up’ singer is expected in the country on 2 August when she will visit BSD facilities in Gaborone, Ramotswa and Francistown.
“Waar Was Jy decided to make a benefit concert for BSD because of the great work they do around the country, providing learning and opportunities for deaf people,” a post on the Waar Was Jy Oldies Facebook page reads.
“Most of us take for granted the gift of hearing we have been given. What better way to support those without that gift than through music? We therefore ask those corporates and individuals who can, to assist us in raising P100 000 to assist the efforts in empowering deaf people in Botswana.”
Event organiser Lecco Kenosi called on locals to support the initiative.
“I urge all corporates and individuals to come on board, buy the tickets and allow this event to become a success,” Kenosi said. "We have reserved about 100 corporate tickets worth P1 000 each whose money will be donated to charity. We believe that this money will come in handy for the BSD, as it can be used to get more resources needed to help in the running of the organisation."
"It should be noted that Yvonne Chaka Chaka is an expensive artist but she has decided to do this event at a very reasonable prices because she is very passionate about charity work and giving back to communities.
BSD acting director Kabelo Seadimo said deaf people also enjoyed music. "Most people believe that deaf people cannot hear music but I want to clear that misconception and say that they respond to the rhythm and vibrations through their feet, so people should not seem surprised to see them dancing."
Yvonne Chaka Chaka will headline another charity concert in Uganda where the proceeds will go towards the construction of a school.
