Simi becomes first female African act to hit 100m Audiomack streams
Audiomack has honoured Nigeria’s Simi for becoming the first female African act to hit 100 million plays on the streaming platform.
Founded in 2012, the service currently boasts 20 million monthly users and as of December 2021 it was the top-ranked music streaming app on Apple’s iOS in Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Senegal, and Kenya.
The gesture forms part of activities curated in celebration of Women’s History Month in March, which spotlights outstanding women in Nigeria’s music industry while providing an opportunity for dialogue on how women are challenging inequality and fostering inclusion within the Nigerian music space.
For the hitmaker, the milestone was propelled by highly successful releases, including ‘Joromi’, ‘Duduke’, ‘There For You’, ‘Woman’ and Sáré’, among others. It also adds to the singer’s growing list of achievements, including recently being named as a judge for the Nigerian Idol talent show.
“Thanks so much to Audiomack for the honour,” Simi said about the milestone. “First female to get 100 million plays on Audiomack. I like it very much. Thank God for growth and thank God for my amazing fans for always supporting me.”
“This year, we at Audiomack chose to celebrate women whom we believe have made significant strides in their career and have in one way or the other impacted the growth of the music ecosystem,” Audiomack Africa’s head of media and brand partnerships Charlotte Bwana said. “This is because, as women, it is important to come together to empower and motivate each other. Audiomack remains committed to levelling the playing field for female creators by giving emerging established artists equal opportunities on our platform.”
Meanwhile, Audiomack has announced its ambassador programme, which brings together a selection of music tastemakers from across the continent to discover and curate the best regional music while spotlighting the most promising artists. Each ambassador will compile weekly playlists on the streaming portal.
