South Africa’s PJ Powers to thrill Zim fans
South African singer PJ Powers is scheduled to perform at the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority headquarters in Harare on 28 July. Titled Green Concert, the event will be held under the theme Invisible Champions and is an environmental awareness campaign through music, dance and song.
Real name Penelope Jane Dunlop, PJ Powers is no stranger to the Zimbabwean audience. The singer performed at last year’s Rhino Fest Three concert. She will be joined by local artists such as Pah Chihera and Dereck Mpofu. Powers is expected to perform her songs that dominated the charts in the 1980s such as ‘There is an Answer’ and ‘Jabulani’.
Speaking to NewsDay, Mpofu said the event will see the launch the inaugural Green Ambassador Guild Awards, which are meant to honour individuals and institutions championing environmental causes in different communities.
He added: “The Green concert makes a return with a bang as will be also launching the Green Ambassador Guild Awards meant to recognise Green Ambassadors for their focus on sustainable and results based initiatives that have an impact on addressing the current issues of the day relevant to our nation.
“The awards recognise and celebrate the organisations championing community causes, individual community champions, innovators, green corporates, trail blazers and unique initiatives in efforts to safeguard our environment.”
In a related development SA musician Ringo Madlingozi and his Zimbabwean counterpart Alick Macheso are expected to thrill fans at the 2017 edition of Miss World Zimbabwe pageant at Borrowdale Brooke Golf Course in Harare on 22 July. The two artists will be joined by local musician Dr Tawanda.
Madlingozi who gained fame in Zimbabwe after collaborating with Oliver Mtukudzi on ‘Into Yami`, is a favourite for many. His popularity has gained him countless performances south of the boarder.
Speaking to The Herald, pageant spokesperson Tendai Chirau said, “Big Time team are the ones bringing Ringo and are doing the staging, lights and PA system. So far rehearsals have begun and we are set to go for Saturday. The grand finale will see television personality Rumbidzai Takawira hosting the event.”
