South African band The City to tour Tanzania
The City, a four-piece band based in Cape Town, is set to make its maiden tour outside South Africa to Tanzania. The two-week tour kicks off on 27 October in Dar es Salaam.
The band consists of Bonj Mpanza on lead vocals and percussions, Clement Carr on keys and synths, Ryan McArthur on bass guitar and synth bass and Reuben “Ruby” Crowie on drums and samples. They perform music they call Afro-electro. Guided by a strong belief in paying tribute to their musical heritage, they blend African rhythms and grooves with electronic sounds and soulful melodies. In April 2015 they successfully launched their self-titled debut EP, which includes the single 'Long For You'. For their Tanzanian tour the band will miss the services of their drummer Crowie.
“We're excited to announce our first tour outside SA borders! Wish Reuben could join us, but definitely the first of many. So we will be going back to our live electronica roots in Tanzania,” the band shared on their Facebook page.
As well as studying music at university, all four members have earned their stripes playing with South African acts like Goodluck, The Kiffness, Jimmy Nevis, Jeremy Loops, Card On Spokes, Chad Saaiman, Captain Stu and The Rudimentals before joining forces to create The City.
Besides Dar es Salaam, the band will stage performances in Zanzibar and Bagamoyo. They will take part in a two-day workshop at the Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA) in Zanzibar. Their final performance of the tour will be at the Karibu Music Festival in Bagamoyo.
