Sun-El Musician to play A Journey Into South African Sounds virtual gig
South African musician and producer Sun-El Musician will perform on 26 March as part of Soda Studios’ A Journey Into South African Sounds series.
Sun-El Musician’s virtual gig will be the second in the series, after Urban Village performed at Soda Studios in Johannesburg on 10 March. The series is designed to bring viewers around the world closer to some of South Africa’s finest musicians and has been touted as a ‘social stream experience’ where fans will get to chat to each other in real time, donate to the artists performing and view added content.
The virtual performance follows the release of Sun-El Musician’s TikTok fan compilation video ‘Ubomi Abumanga’ off his 2020 album To the World & Beyond, and guest artists will include Nobuhle, Vernotile and Kenza.
Sun-El Musician told Music In Africa that he had mixed feelings releasing To the World & Beyond during the COVID-19 lockdown. “To me it’s been good and it’s been bad,” he said. “The bad is not being able to play to a much larger audience. Not only that but engaging with the audience as well. The good is that my music is being streamed more, as people are at home.
“It’s been hard but we have managed to create live-streaming sets that I get to do now and then and I also just released a visual album titled A Journey to the World & Beyond. There’s definitely going to be more live-streaming sets in the future and other exciting stuff.”
Commenting on his approach to live streaming and pre-recorded virtual concerts, the ‘Akanamali’ hitmaker said: “I start it off mellow and allow the audience to warm up and eventually I make it dance. I present my sets the same way I do when I play live to the audience.”
The show will be live on US platform StageIT. Purchase tickets here.
Limited tickets for the in-person show in Johannesburg are available via Quicket here.
