Tay Grin, Ata Kak to join Rick Ross at Iceland festival
African artists Tay Grin (Malawi) and Ata Kak (Ghana) will perform at the fourth edition of Secret Solstice Festival on 16-18 June in Reykjavík, Iceland. The two Africans will join well-known musicians from around the world, chief among them US rappers Rick Ross and Big Sean as well as rockers Foo Fighters.
According to its website, Secret Solstice showcases established artists as well as upcoming talent over the course of three days in the 24-hour midnight sun during the summer solstice.
Tay Grin shared the news on Facebook. “Your boy is performing in ICELAND @ Secret Solstice SUPER EXCITED CHECK OUT THEIR SITE FOR THE GREAT LINE UP. We moving on up,” he wrote.
Real name Limbani Kalilani, Tay Grin becomes the first Malawian to perform at the festival. His slot at Secret Solstice is confirmed for 17 June.
“Secret Solstice is a hip hop oriented festival which is perfect for my portfolio and [an] excellent opportunity to introduce hip hop with African taste to the West. [I am] very excited to be the first Malawian artist to this festival,” Grin was quoted as saying.
Ata Kak is expected to shine at the festival. With a career spanning more than two decades, he has played at festivals around the world and is a favourite with European music fans. Real name Yaw Atta-Owusu, Ata Kak gained fame with his album Obaa Sima, a seven-track offering that was released by an American record label called Awesome Tapes From Africa.
Other acts lined up for the festival include The Prodigy (UK), Chaka Khan (US), Richard Ashcroft (UK), Anderson Paak & The Free Nationals (US), Young MA (US), Rhye (US), Seth Troxler (US), Unknown Mortal Orchestra (UK), Kerri Chandler (US), Dubfire (US), Pharoahe Monch (US) and a host of international DJs from the UK and Iceland.
There will be a number of side events alongside the festival itself, namely Into The Glacier, a party inside the Langjökull glacier, and the self-explanatory Midnight Sun Boat Party.
