Top West African musicians up for BreakTudo Awards in Brazil
The nominees for this year’s BreakTudo Awards in Rio, Brazil, have been unveiled ahead of the awards ceremony on 21 October, with West African musicians Wizkid, Burna Boy and Shatta Wale securing nominations.
The annual BreakTudo Awards celebrate artistic achievements in music, film, television and digital influence.
Nigeria’s Burna Boy and Wizkid were shortlisted in the International Collaboration category for ‘Ginger’ off Wizkid’s 2020 album Made In Lagos, while Ghana’s Shatta Wale is in the running for the Global Artist Award alongside Calum Scott (UK), IU (South Korea), Machine Gun Kelly (US), Thalia (Mexico) and Troye Sivan (Australia).
The nominations add to a slew of accomplishments that the musicians have made this year. Both Burna Boy and Wizkid won Grammys back in March. In the same month, Wizkid’s contribution on Beyoncé’s ‘Brown Skin Girl’ earned him a second consecutive NAACP Image Award. Last week, the ‘Essence’ singer and Shatta Wale scored nods at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.
Veteran singer-songwriter, TV host and actress Ivete Sangalo will receive the Brazilian Pop Icon Award in recognition of her long, impactful career and overall contribution to pop culture in the South American country.
Last year, the awards aired on 24 October and were hosted by singer and YouTuber Escarião. The awards also received a record-breaking 94 million votes from around the world.
Voting for this year’s edition is ongoing via the BreakTudo official website. The 2021 BreakTudo Awards will be broadcast on Telemilenio’s YouTube channel and feature music performances and special appearances.
