Uganda's Sheebah is Mdundo's most downloaded female artist
This according to the Kenyan-based pan-African music platform. Sheebah took her excitement to social media where she posted a picture of the award on 28 October with the caption: “Thank You @MdundoAwards, most downloaded Female 2017.”
Her most downloaded songs include ‘John Rambo’ and ‘Nkwatako’, according to the site. Sheebah has had a successful year, having made her debut on Coke Studio Africa 2017 where she worked with Malawian-born, South African-based music producer Gemini Major.
“My dream is to become an international artist, not just locked in Uganda, but to be the biggest superstar I can ever be,” Sheebah said during an interview with Coke Studio Africa last month.
“Being on Coke Studio Africa this year is one of the things that have made me feel like I'm on my way now. I am so honoured to be here and that Coke Studio has recognised me; Africa is recognising me and I am happy to be working with talented producers and musicians."
Mdundo’s head of music and operations, Wanjiku Koinange, said the site had boosted a number of local chart toppers. This year, 30 million songs were streamed on Mdundo times – 70% on the web platform and the rest via its app. In February this year, Sheebah, who's formely part of the Ugandan girl group Obsessions, was awarded best female artist at Uganda’s HiPipo Awards 2017.
