Watch music video that won SA Indie Film Fest award
A music video shot in Johannesburg walked away with the Best Music Video Award at the inaugural South African Independent Film Festival (SAIFF) held at the Labia Theatre in Cape Town last week.
The video for ‘Gasoline’ by Fortnite, which comprises Swedish producer Robot Koch and Australian musician Fiora, was co-directed by German filmmakers Sven Dreesbach and Phillip Primus.
The SAIFF showcased music videos, documentaries, short films as and virtual-reality films from across the globe. The judging panel included Prime Circle frontman Ross Learmonth, actor and singer Steve Wall, actor Brandon Auret and others.
The central theme of the video is car spinning in South Africa, which is now more than three decades old. The story of spinning says that car thieves in the townships would spin as a way of dodging the cops. Over time it became a form of township entertainment for both drivers and onlookers.
The culture of spinning is often characterised by the BMW E30 325i (featured in the video) nicknamed 'gusheshe'. While it was once symbolic of gangsterism, spinning has been formalised and arenas have been set up to give spinners a platform where they can burn rubber legally.
