WOMEX 2022 announces first batch of artists for Lisbon event
The organisers of the 2022 edition of the Worldwide Music Expo (WOMEX) have announced the first batch of jury-selected showcasing artists who will perform at the music trade show in Lisbon, Portugal, from 19 to 23 October.
The announcement follows an open call for showcasing artists in March. The line-up, currently numbering more than 20 artists, represent a wide range of countries and cultures and will be bringing diverse musical influences from across the globe to the 28th edition of WOMEX.
The first batch of performers includes African acts such as Al Bilali Soudan (Mali), Aywa (Morocco/France), Djazia Satour (Algeria/France), Djely Tapa (Mali/Canada), Etuk Ubong & The Etuk Philosophy (Nigeria), Pilani Bubu (South Africa) and The Dizzy Brains (Madagascar).
They were selected by an independent international jury, which also curates the programme. Together with the WOMEX showcase team, a dedicated curator selects the Club Summit showcases.
“Rounding up a huge variety of artists, the official showcase selection places special emphasis on newcomers to the international touring circuit,” WOMEX said.
More acts are expected to be announced in due course.
WOMEX is one of the most important meetings in the global music scene. Its musical spectrum ranges from traditional to the new global-local underground – embracing folk, roots, jazz, local and diasporic cultures as well as urban and electronic sounds from all over the globe.
