YouTube hosts Joburg music day to celebrate Africa Month
YouTube hosted a music day event in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, on 22 May, to reaffirm its commitment in supporting South African talent.
The event was part of YouTube’s Africa Month celebrations and highlighted the contributions of amapiano artists and the genre’s impact on the global music scene.
It featured unique stories from artists like Tyler ICU, Kabza De Small, Darque and KMAT, who delved into how they are shaping the future of amapiano in South Africa and around the world. It also gave artists an opportunity to connect with the audience through interactive talks, fireside chats, Q&A sessions and music.
“Creating environments where artists and thought leaders can come together, collaborate and celebrate the diverse nature of African music is vital to empowering and developing artists on the continent,” YouTube’s head of music in sub-Saharan Africa, Addy Awofisayo, said.
Also featured at the event was a panel discussion with Tyler ICU, KMAT, Warner Africa managing director Temi Adeniji and Empire Records head of territory Innocent Nkosi.
Moderated by Google South Africa communications manager Siya Madikane, the panel unpacked topics around music release strategies on YouTube and explored new ways to facilitate amapiano’s growth for a sustainable future.
Madikane said YouTube remained committed to placing the spotlight on Africa’s vibrant music scene and how it captivated audiences worldwide.
“This is evident in the fact that more than 70% of views for the top 25% of sub-Saharan artists on the platform come from outside the continent,” he said.
“YouTube is dedicated to showcasing and supporting African artists, enabling them on their journey to global recognition. Through ongoing efforts, the platform has been instrumental in the discovery and nurturing of the African sound, exposing it to listeners globally.”
