This is according to a YouTube top-10 survey, which is released annually by the streaming platform to shed light on the watching habits of Kenyans.
‘Dusuma’ was played 10 million times in three months after its release and currently enjoys more than 16 million views. The song gained widespread popularity on social media with the Dusuma Dance Challenge. Otile Brown also claimed the ninth spot on the list with ‘Aiyana’ featuring Sanaipei Tande.
‘Teamo’ by Rayvanny featuring Mozambican singer Messias Maricoa was the most-played song by a Tanzanian artist and ranks at No 2. Lizer Classic and Nusder Venom produced the music while the video, directed by Eris Mzava, was shot in Portugal.
Recording artist, entrepreneur and media mogul Diamond Platnumz was the most streamed international artist in the country with two songs on the list. They include ‘Jeje’ and ‘Quarantine’ at No 3 and No 9 respectively. ‘Gere’ by Kenya’s Tanasha Donna, which took fifth spot, also features Diamond Platnumz, who recently made it on the Grammy Awards’ 2020 consideration list.
Celebrated Kenyan band Sauti Sol’s ‘Suzzana’ ranks at No 4 while ‘Utawezana’ by Femi One and Mejja is sixth. The latter’s success came after the emergence of #Utawezana challenge on TikTok.
American rapper Future takes the seventh position with ‘Life is Good’ featuring Drake. Wrapping up the list at No 10 is Kenya’s H_art the Band with ‘El Shaddai' featuring Cedo. The song is off the band’s Made In the Streets album, which was released in August last year.
