Zim: Vimbai Zimuto drops Muroora ahead of 27 May EP launch
Zimbabwean musician Vimbai Zimuto has released ‘Muroora’ off her upcoming debut EP Muto set for release on 27 May.
The EP will be accompanied by a launch at Jason Mphepo Little Theatre in Eastlea, Harare, with performances from Zimuto, Baba Harare and Diana Samkange.
The six tracks on the EP were written by Zimuto with production and mastering courtesy of Trust Samende. Jiti ‘Maestro’ Maselo assisted with production on the track ‘Ndipe Mwana’ featuring Baba Harare.
The title of the EP is derived from Zimuto’s surname, which means ‘soup’. “Soup is a mixture of a variety of spices,” Zimuto told Music In Africa. “There are six different songs on this EP that define who Vimbai Zimuto really is. It’s a mixed soup. There is Afropop, Afro-jazz, Afrobeat, Afro-traditional and passada/kizomba.
“I’m reintroducing myself to make my fans know that I am a diverse artist who is comfortable in every genre. My next album will focus on one of the genres on this EP. I featured Baba Harare on ‘Ndipe Mwana’ because I love jiti, and as a diverse traditional dancer and artist I thought he would be the best to bring out my jiti traditional side.
“It became more difficult to know who I am and I just poured myself into this EP. I have been working on this EP since last year, so it took a bit more time than I normally take, but I am happy that I took my time to perfect all that I wanted done.”
Zimuto was born in Chitungwiza in 1983 and plays the mbira, marimba and percussion. She was part of Oliver Mtkudzi’s Black Spirits band, with which she toured the UK, US and Canada. She pursued a solo career and recorded her first album Ndawana Mukana in 2007. Other releases include Kure Kwemeso (2013) and Hapana Kwaunoenda (2018).
