Zimbabwe’s Sandra Ndebele joins US publisher
Zimbabwean musician Sandra Ndebele has inked a deal with a US music publishing company OMG Studios. A part of the deal will see her music made available for sale on music streaming services such as iTunes and Spotify.
Ndebele, who hogged the limelight in early 2000, was previously signed to Gramma Records. The stable is one of the country’s oldest music recording and distribution companies that boasts an extensive catalogue of local music. Ndebele got the deal through Andy Cutta Films, a South Africa-based company with roots in Zimbabwe.
Ndebele, who recently bagged two trophies at the Bulawayo Arts Awards, spoke to Music In Africa about the deal. Asked why she left Gramma Records for the US publisher, she said: “Gramma has to put its house in order before we submit new works with them. Seeing that I want to grow my brand beyond the region, that's why I opted for them because they have the capacity to create that platform for us.”
Ndebele also said the deal would enable her to collaborate with musicians beyond Zimbabwe's borders. Ndebele, however, couldn’t disclose any names just yet. “I will be doing one in Southern Africa and another in West Africa. I will advise you in due course,” she said.
Ndebele’s partnership with OMG will constitute a full-package deal that is expected to see her touring the world.
“This is a great opportunity for me and the Zimbabwean industry,” Ndebele told a local daily. “I am currently working towards my latest album, which will be released and launched locally and internationally. As soon as it comes, I will be doing tours locally and globally thanks to OMG Studios.”
Besides being regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s top singers, Ndebele is also a revered dancer and choreographer who has performed in India, Dubai, China, the UK, Russia, Canada and Japan. Ndebele was on a long sabbatical before resurfacing this year with a new track titled ‘Ingoma’ featuring Afro-pop artist Mzoe7.
