- The late Hugh Masekela.
The annual event is courtesy of Assupol and Semopa Entertainment and will be free to access on Skyroom Live. Now in its sixth edition, the festival seeks to uphold Hugh Masekela’s eclectic and broad vision of African culture, music and heritage.
Other musicians on the line-up include SA-based Congolese musician Tresor and 2019 Standard Bank Young Artist Mandla Mlangeni.
Hosted by poet and cultural activist Natalia Molebatsi, the event will also feature writer and poet Matalane Mokgatla as well as Gregory Maqoma’s Vuyani Dance Theatre and the Tsonga-rooted Bungeni Xikhulu Dance Group.
The event will begin at 8pm CAT and mark the second edition of festival since the passing of the legendary Masekela in 2018.
“Now, more than ever, is a time to remember who we are as Africans, in our heritage, our culture and our identity – all day, every day,” festival co-organiser Mabusha Masekela said.
Assupol head of group corporate affairs Velmah Nzembela said: “Assupol has supported the Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival for several years because of the synergies between our mission of serving those who serve and our passion for honouring heritage.
“We see the value in Bra Hugh’s desire to preserve and celebrate African heritage and we are proud to have added power to his cause through our support of the Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival. With the festival being broadcast online, Bra Hugh’s vision is amplified to a bigger audience – we encourage everyone to tune in.”
