Morocco: MARAM to host virtual debate on artistic rights

The panel discussion takes place on 9 October 2020 and will be moderated by cultural practitioner Aadel Essaadani. The speakers include multidisciplinary artist Siham Ayouch (Morocco), actress and slam artist Aurore Pangopo (DRC), musician and human rights defender Reuben Odoi (Ghana) and social anthropologist Sebastien Bachelet (UK).

The creatives will give testimonials of their work with examples of how their artistic freedom has been interfered with. They will also discuss censorship and self-censorship.

Apart from the discussion, MARAM will present:

• A documentary on the implementation of the MARAM project.
• A legal and administrative guide for artists in Morocco.
• An online exhibition and a catalogue of artistic works by local artists who have previously taken part in a MARAM artistist residency. The artists include Siham Ayouch, Ayoub Benkhalifa, Nabil Boudarqa, Joël Kongou Essindi, Mariama Kanny Keita, Oumaima Maarouf, Hassan Mannana and Aurore Pangopo.

MARAM is a collaborative project between the universities of Edinburgh, Manchester and Keele with Morocco-based cultural association the Minority Globe. It aims to support Moroccan and migrant artists by strengthening knowledge of their rights, delivering bespoke professional training, and providing a space for work and artistic collaborations.
