South Africa mourns death of DJ Dimplez
The news about DJ Dimplez’s death was confirmed by his family in a statement that said the ‘Way Up’ artist succumbed to a brain haemorrhage.
“It is with deep sadness that the Mooi family announces the untimely passing of Boitumelo Athiel Mooi, popularly known as DJ Dimplez,” the family said. “We ask for your space and respect as we process Tumi's tragic passing. Thank you for your understanding.”
His death was met with a deluge of condolences from fellow artists and industry bodies on social media.
“Heaven has gained another music pioneer,” the South African Music Performance Rights Association said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the Mooi family, friends and fans. Lala Ngoxolo [rest in peace].”
The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) wrote: “In loving memory of Tumi ‘DJ Dimplez’ Mooi, RiSA would like to send heartfelt condolence to the Mooi family, friends and fans for their loss. Rest in peace.”
Ambitiouz Entertainment wrote: “Heaven has gained another giant. Our deepest condolences to the Mooi family, friends and fans. Rest easy DJ Dimplez.”
“The news of the passing of Boitumelo Mooi, known as DJ Dimplez, have been received with deep sadness and a great sense of loss,” the Southern Music Rights Organisation said. “The South African music industry continues to lose valuable contributors. May he rest in peace. He will be missed by friends, family and fans alike.”
Miss Pru DJ posted: “SA hip hop has taken another major knock; we lost a game-changer. Such a nice, humble guy. Condolences to the Mooi family, DJ Dimplez’s friends and fans. Rest easy DJ Dimplez.”
Rouge wrote: “My mentor and my friend. I can't stop crying. Goodbye.”
DJ Dimplez played a pivotal role in the growing local hip hop scene. He began his career working for popular TV channels such as Vuzu and Channel O. He was also behind the YouTube channel PopCast and the Pop Bottles event. DJ Dimplez played alongside renowned artists such as Oskido, DJ Fresh, DJ S’bu, DJ Kenzhero and Milkshake. In 2019, he released an album called Kubu featuring a number of artists including Anatii, Khuli Chana and KidX. Some of Dimplez’s songs include ‘We Ain't Leaving’, ‘Way Up’, ‘Pop Bottles’, ‘Popcast’ and ‘Amantombazane Remix’.
