South Africa: MTV VJ Search close to finding winner

The VJ search competition, which began in March this year, saw 8 000 aspirants trying their luck to join the likes of Nomuzi Mabena, Sandile Ntshingila and Sizwe Dhlomo who was the first African winner of the MTV Base VJ Search in 2005.

Adams, Makgoba and Mosupye will know their fate on 27 August at the Icon, a club owned by DJ Sphectacula and DJ Naves, in Soweto, Johannesburg, from where the final episode of MTV Base VJ Search will be aired on DStv channel 322.

Through a 12-month contract, the winner of the competition will be given the opportunity to host MTV Base shows and interact with artists from across the globe at events such as the Video Music Awards (VMAs), European Music Awards (EMAs) and the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs). The winner will also receive an Edgars Active voucher to the value of R20 000 ($1 500) and accessories from Jabari.

“The MTV Base VJ Search format provides an opportunity to open up the industry for young hopefuls,” BET vice-president Monde Twala said. “MTV’s ability to discover and elevate talent on the continent remains a primary brand focus.”

Notable people who have enjoyed success at MTV Base include Pearl Thusi who features in US TV series Quantico and hosts Lip Sync Battle Africa.

The category head for sponsor Breezer, Anshuman Goenka, said: “The final contestants are a testament to what it means to truly live your life in colour. Each one of them has brought their own unique flavour to the show. We are proud to be associated with such a diverse and passionate group of talented individuals. We wish them all the best of luck.”
