SA: Jade Garisch teams up with M. Rumbi on Sink Not Swim
South African indie singer Jade Garisch and South Africa-based Kenyan producer M. Rumbi have released a new single titled ‘Sink Not Swim’.
This song, which is available for streaming and download, delves deep into the intricate complexities of a tumultuous relationship, navigating the fine line between yearning for emotional connection and fearing causing harm.
‘Sink Not Swim’ embodies a blend of genres. It leans into the realms of funk/soul and electronic dance while incorporating hints of pop and R&B. The mood of the track is primarily chill, creating a balanced emotional profile with medium energy levels. It evokes a sense of calm, making it a soothing yet engaging listening experience.
Listeners will be enveloped by a musical landscape that features percussion, piano and synth elements. These instrumental choices complement the emotional dynamics of the track.
“‘Sink Not Swim’ is a testament to the power of virtual collaboration,” Jade said. “M. Rumbi and I embarked on this musical journey from different cities, each recording our parts from the comfort of our own homes. Despite the physical distance, the collaborative process was seamless. We were in constant communication, open to adjustments and dedicated to crafting the best possible track.”
Known for her soulful vocals, Jade takes the lead, with her powerful presence adding depth and authenticity to the song, amplifying the emotional journey it embarks upon. M. Rumbi’s production expertise adds layers of richness to the track, creating a sonic experience that resonates profoundly.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Jade said: “The song explores the theme of willingly entering a toxic relationship. As if you’re diving into the deep, dark depths of the ocean, fully aware that you won’t emerge unscathed. Despite the heavy subject matter, ‘Sink Not Swim’ feels uplifting as it captures the pleasurable aspects of such relationships – the passion, thrill and awareness of a fleeting moment. It’s a soulful experience that delves into the paradox of harmful attractions.”
Jade is a singer and songwriter from the Eastern Cape who currently lives in Cape Town. She studied theatre arts at Brandeis University in Boston, US, and is inspired by many music genres as she seeks to create dreamy alt-pop songs. Her recent releases include ‘Bad Bitch’, ‘Oceans Apart’ and ‘Down That Road’. Apart from singing, Jade also works in fashion and has her own brand: JINJ by Jade.
M. Rumbi, meanwhile, is a producer and songwriter celebrated for his talent and commitment to pushing creative boundaries. Based in Bloemfontein, South Africa, his diverse musical influences shine through in his emotive and captivating musical productions.
“Collaborating with Jade on ‘Sink Not Swim’ was an incredible experience. Despite living in different cities, our communication and openness made the process smooth,” M.Rumbi said. “We reworked the song in a lower key to bring out the soulful vocals, and it was a risk worth taking. Jade’s artistic instincts truly elevated the track.”
