Watch Sampa the Great's ‘OMG’ video
Zambian-born Australian singer and rapper Sampa the Great has released a video for ‘OMG’.
Produced by Kwes Darko, the ‘OMG’ video is off the The Return album set for release on 13 September. The video is directed by Sanjay De Silva and is a celebration of fashion and African beauty amid fast-tempo raps and stylish dancing.
“OMG is a flex of the culture and art coming out of the continent today,” Sampa the Great wrote on Facebook. "Glad to be a part of a group of people who find joy in sharing the beauty of where we are from and who we are. This song is part of a body of work that will be released later this year, shot in South Africa and Botswana with a special appearance by my parents."
“I got to do something that I’ve never done before,” she added. “Which is to have my parents in one of my music videos. This is the first time they have been involved in my music at this level and it was important for me to express accepting and flexing my culture with the two people who know me most.
“I personally feel that people on the continent have a duty to our family in the diaspora, to re-teach our culture, language, spirituality, ways and return our peeps to ourselves. To me ‘OMG’ sounds like the songs we heard in our childhood. It’s broadly about flexing your culture! Loving where you’re from and even being shocked at the realisation of not knowing how dope it is to be ‘who you are.”
Sampa’s 19-track upcoming album will feature such tracks as ‘Mwana’, ‘Freedom’, ‘Grass Is Greener’, ‘Light It Up’, ‘Diamond in the Ruff’, ‘Leading Us Home’ and ‘Heaven’. The album will feature Ecca Vandal (SA), Krown (Australia), Mwanje Tembo (Zambia), Theresa Mutale Tembo and Sunburnt Soul Choir (Zambia), Whosane (US), Steam Down (UK) and Mandarin Dreams (Australia).
