Alex Hitzeroth

Alex Hitzeroth is a South African trombonist, sousaphonist, educator and arranger.

Hitzeroth started playing the trombone at the age of eight at a local church band. In 1998, he was selected to tour Russia with the South African National Youth Orchestra, culminating in a symphony concert at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and a World Youth Orchestra performance on Red Square under the direction of Valery Gergiev.

Over the past 20 years, Alex has been an active musician, both orchestrally and in various other genres. He has performed extensively with orchestras all over South Africa including the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. In his role as a professional trombonist, Alex has shared the stage with many illustrious musicians, both international and local. Some of these artists include: Andrea Bocceli, Luciano Pavarotti, Abdullah Ibrahim and the Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.

He performs regularly with different ensembles, including: The Johannesburg Big Band, ZAR Jazz Orchestra, Bombshelter Beast and as a band member on live television productions like The Voice and Dancing with the Stars.

Alex was on the adjudication panel for the South African Music Rights Organisation Overseas Scholarship Competition. SAMRO has also commissioned Alex to write arrangements for ensembles of South African traditional and current music. In 2020 Alex released The Ingoma Series, a collection of South African music arranged for youth ensembles.

Alex is a sought after brass educator, music arranger and ensemble director at some of Johannesburg's premier music departments. He is active in developing educational programmes that promote the learning of brass instruments and maintaining a culture of music education for youth.
