TRYPHON EVARIST
Tryphon Evarist is a highly educated and multi-talented musician from Zanzibar, Tanzania, renowned for his versatility and creativity in the music industry. As a skilled composer, songwriter, singer, and traditional dancer, Tryphon has mastered a diverse array of musical instruments, including the accordion, clarinet, Qanun, and traditional drums, showcasing his exceptional musical prowess.
Current Role:
Tryphon holds the esteemed positions of Performer, Music Teacher, and Artistic Director at the Dhow Countries Music Academy in Zanzibar. His work at the academy emphasises the fusion of various musical styles, focusing particularly on the traditional Taarab music of Zanzibar and his innovative fusion music style.
Musical Genre:
Dedicated to the exploration and development of music, Tryphon applies his vast knowledge across multiple genres, specialising in traditional Taarab and his unique brand of fusion music. His open-minded approach allows him to continually integrate new elements into his music, enriching the diversity of his compositions.
Performing Experience:
Tryphon’s rich performing career includes significant appearances both nationally and internationally:
- Local Festivals: Zanzibar International Film Festival (2017), Sauti za Busara Festival (2017, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023), Ongala Music Festival, Dar es Salaam (2019), Marahaba Swahili Music Festival, Dar es Salaam (2017).
- International Tours and Festivals: Paya Festival, Kenya (2016); multiple performances in Switzerland (2018); DOADOA East African Performing Arts Market, Uganda (2018); tours across the UAE, including Sharjah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Kuwait (2018/2019); and recent performances in Comoros (2023).
Tryphon Evarist continues to be a seminal figure in the cultural and musical landscape of Zanzibar, contributing significantly to the preservation and innovation of its musical heritage.
