In the lead-up to the release, Babes Wodumo will drop three singles on 3 October. These include ‘Sip n See’ featuring Madanon, Jay Music, Don Edward, Frost, SK and Sundile, as well as ‘Ekhoneni’, a collaboration with Lelowhatsgood featuring Rifle Deep. The singles are expected to reaffirm her influence in gqom music while spotlighting emerging talents in the gqom and EDM scenes.
The EP also features a Maskandi-inspired track titled ‘Ngakuthanda Kahulu’ featuring Ushuni Wasemzini, reflecting a new creative direction for the artist.
Speaking about her comeback, Babes Wodumo said the project was inspired by her personal journey of loss and healing.
“I took time to reflect on life’s events. I appreciate the love I have received from people who have supported me and my music, especially during the difficult time of losing my husband, Mampintsha. This new work is dedicated to him, the people of South Africa, and the world,” she said.
Babes Wodumo, who rose to prominence in 2015 with the hit single ‘Wololo’, has been recognised as one of the leading figures in the gqom genre. Her achievements include a feature on the Black Panther soundtrack and nominations for Song of the Year and Breakthrough Artist at the MTV Africa Music Awards in 2016.
Following her brief withdrawal from the industry, Babes Wodumo’s return was sparked by a creative song camp held in August, organised by Content Connect Africa in collaboration with the artist. The session brought together emerging Gqom producers and resulted in the Mabeshingo EP.
The project explores themes of resilience, legacy, and artistic renewal, positioning Babes Wodumo once again at the forefront of the evolving gqom movement.
