Swakopmund Arts Association

Bio

The Swakopmund Arts Association is a non-profit organisation that was founded in 1947 after the Second World War. Its members work in the fields of music, theatre, literature and fine arts. The organisation was founded as an off-shoot of the South African Arts Association. The association began by organizing gigs for Germany musicians. It started to integrate readings, theatre plays and small exhibitions in the reading room of the Swakopmund Museum. In the 1980s, Swakopmund Arts Association began to make an impact within the country’s arts industry. It began to make a collection of valuable paintings and established a proper gallery. The gallery was courtesy of SWA / Namibia Administration, a local municipality which handed over its upper room premises to the institute. In early 2000, The Woermannhaus Art Gallery became home to the association. The gallery belongs to and is run by the Swakopmunder Arts Association.

In 2013 and 2014, Swakopmund hosted a number of concerts such as the The Lat Rose of Summer, Mascato Youth Choir and Ballet Fantasie. It also accommodated exhibitions by The Nutcracker, Werner Schröder, Peter Strack, Konrad Zander.
