Nigeria's FAVE named Spotify EQUAL Africa artist for November
Spotify has selected Nigerian singer FAVE as its EQUAL Africa artist for November 2024 following her participation in the programme in March 2022.
Launched in April 2021, EQUAL Africa is a key component of Spotify’s EQUAL Hub, aimed at promoting gender equity in the global music industry through curated playlists, specialised content hubs, and collaborative efforts. Over the years, the initiative has highlighted African artists such as Yemi Alade, Ayra Starr, Aṣa, Gyakie, Somi, DBN Gogo and Soraia Ramos.
“Being a woman in the music industry can feel like an uphill climb, but it’s made me more determined,” FAVE said. “The EQUAL programme is special because it centres on supporting women, ensuring our voices are given prominence. It’s empowering to be part of something that’s working towards balance in the industry.”
Spotify’s head of music for sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu, added: “FAVE is a shining example of the talent and potential emerging from Africa’s vibrant music scene. Her sound has resonated with listeners across the globe, and we’re proud to celebrate her as part of the EQUAL Africa programme. We look forward to seeing her inspire the next generation of artists.”
FAVE first gained mainstream notice in 2020 with her ‘N.B.U’ single Since then, she has released multiple chart-topping singles and acclaimed projects, including her debut EP Riddim 5 and its follow-up Dutty Love. Her boasts collaborations with top Nigerian artists like Olamide, Simi, Phyno, and Davido have strengthened her reputation, and her feature on Davido’s ‘Kante’ from the Timeless album was one of Spotify’s Top 10 most-streamed songs in Nigeria for 2023.
“I realised making music was in my destiny right from when I was a little girl,” FAVE said. “I used to sing in the choir and write my own songs. I immediately told my friends that music is something I enjoy and would want to do for life. I pursued music because it gave me life. I could do it seamlessly. So eventually I realised it was more than a hobby; it’s a talent I could depend on.”
She added: “My music has a lot of soul and feelings. I’d say my style is a spectrum.”
Spotify, launched in 2008, now serves 626 million users worldwide, providing access to 100 million tracks and 6 million podcasts, with 246 million Premium subscribers across 180 markets.
