
Call for applications: Music In Africa Foundation project officer
The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) seeks to appoint an experienced Project Officer, to be based in Rosebank, Johannesburg. The Project Officer will work closely with the Project Manager to accomplish key deliverables for a number of projects within the department, including but not limited to the ACCES music conference, the Instrument Building and Repair project, training workshops, artist exchange programmes and other initiatives.
The MIAF is a pan-African, non-profit organisation based in Rosebank, Johannesburg, with satellite offices in East, West and Central Africa. The MIAF’s mission is to support the African music sector through promoting knowledge exchange and creating opportunities and capacity for music professionals. We do this in two ways: digitally via the Music In Africa website (musicinafrica.net) and offline through training programmes, artist mobility programmes, workshops, concerts, lobbying, conferences and other related initiatives.
This is a deadline-driven position with frequent intense production/delivery phases. The successful candidate should be very well organised, have strong knowledge of the African music sector and be proficient in both English and French. A perfect opportunity for someone who loves music, travelling and the arts in general.
Key responsibilities
- Assume coordination responsibilities for assigned programme activities.
- Assist in maintaining artistic integrity of all projects as set by the MIAF.
- Develop, set-up and manage an implementation plans for projects.
- Identify and communicate project resource needs.
- Work with local and international partners remotely to ensure that all aspects of the project are delivered effectively.
- Assist in project finance administration.
- Assist in membership management.
- Effective management of project timelines.
- Copy and report writing: service provider briefs, project descriptions, press releases, advertisements, posters and flyers.
- Develop contracts for service providers.
- Facilitate engagement processes for workshop trainees, facilitators, artists and technical crew.
- Coordinate work of other project staff.
- Assist in the programming of the ACCES conference programme.
- Communicate effectively with participants in both French and English.
- Assist in the design of new projects.
- Support fundraising activities.
- Submit reports to management and partners.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- A related degree or diploma.
- At least 5 years’ experience in a mid-senior position within the arts and culture sector.
- Experience working in Africa and in the music sector.
- Experience dealing with international donors and other stakeholders
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with French-English bilingualism a requirement.
- In-depth understanding of operational characteristics, services and activities of arts development projects.
- In-depth understanding of practices and procedures of arts management.
- Basic understanding of practices and procedures of arts and culture marketing and public relations.
- Ability to plan, develop and administer activities for arts and culture programmes.
- Highly proficient with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outloook) and iOS.
- Experience working on logistics of big-scale events.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Good knowledge of communications, administrative, organisational and marketing tools and techniques, and other online platforms.
- Experience in managing music programmes (festival and conference programming) would be an added advantage.
- Ability to travel.
