SA: Defected Records partners with Bridges for Music
UK dance label Defected Records last week partnered with South African NPO Bridges for Music to sponsor five students every six months at Bridges Academy in Langa, Cape Town.
Bridges Academy was launched last year to empower future creative leaders from disadvantaged backgrounds through music and art.
“This is a great commitment from Defected to help bridge social gaps through education and support young talent and creative leaders in the most underserved communities,” Bridges for Music’s Valentino Barrioseta said.
“We are honoured to welcome Defected as a patron and we are looking forward to working with their global community in furthering the impact of this programme, especially in these times of hardship.”
Bridges for Music aims to unite the music industry for social impact by harnessing the power of music and creative education. The organisation has been working extensively in South African townships over the last eight years to connect upcoming artists with the global music community.
“As Defected today has unprecedented engagement with millions of fans worldwide, the label team feels a greater responsibility to raise awareness and act on issues that need attention,” a statement reads. “While the music industry and electronic music especially is going global and expanding into developing countries, there is an opportunity to lead meaningful change through the power of music.”
Defected launches record label
Defected has also partnered with UK-based Tanzanian DJ Sef Kombo to launch Sondela Records. The new label is the brainchild of Defected founder Simon Dunmore’s son, Louie Dunmore, and Sef Kombo. All of the label’s proceeds will be channelled to Bridges for Music.
"I am really happy being part of Sondela," Sef Kombo said. "I’ve always wanted to be a part of shining the light on the amazing talents from my home continent and bridging the worlds together to new listeners and also to release amazing future classic records. Even at this early stage in my A&R journey, I’ve learnt so much and I'm so keen to learn more at Sondela."
Simon Dunmore said: “Africa has always influenced and been deeply rooted in dance music across the globe. We wanted to invest in future talent, right at the very source of this creativity. We have a long-term relationship with Bridges for Music and are excited to be able to support such an incredible initiative.”
Louie Dunmore said: “I am so excited to begin my journey with Sondela Records and to be working alongside Sef Kombo. Aligning with Bridges for Music will help me in my own personal development while providing an excellent opportunity to discover creative talent and dig deep to source new music.”
