Nigeria: Tiwa Savage, Patoranking release new albums
Nigerian superstar Tiwa Savage on 28 August released her new 13-track album titled Celia.
Celia is Savage’s debut album released under Universal Music Group. It boasts features from an array of musicians, including Nigeria’s Fireboy DML, Naira Marley, Dice Ailes and Adekunle Gold, as well as the UK’s Stefflon Don and Sam Smith. Some of the songs on the album include ‘Dangerous Love’, ‘Koroba’, ‘Temptation’ and ‘Save My Life’.
The project, which is named after her mother, offers a contemporary African woman’s perspective on wide-ranging societal issues with emotionally charged and upbeat songs, and attests to her musical prowess.
“Celia is my mother's name and I wanted to pay homage to her,” the musician said. “She embodies everything that this album is. It speaks to a strong, modern African woman. This album is Afrobeats from a very female perspective. It’s an extension of the African woman: she still values her culture and her upbringing, but she’s also well-travelled, so it’s blending those two worlds. I want every woman that listens to this to feel attached and connect to it.”
Tiwa released a number of singles ahead of the album, including visuals to ‘Dangerous Love’, which saw her make her directorial debut. Last week, the musician also made her debut appearance on US TV showThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where she performed a live rendition of the song. Listen to Celia here.
Also on the same day, fellow Nigerian singer Patoranking, launched his third album titled Three. Released under Amari Musiq and Empire, the LP features 12 songs and collaborations with Savage, Flavour, Sauti Sol and King Promise, among others. On Three, Patoranking explores themes of life, love and joy fusing dancehall, Afrobeats, highlife, amapiano and soul together.
At 30 years old, Patoranking is among the continent’s notable reggae and dancehall artists. He is best known for songs such as ‘Daniella Whine’, ‘My Woman, My Everything’ and ‘No Kissing’. His previous albums include God Over Everything (2016) and Wilmer (2019). In April, the musician was also featured in Forbes Africa’s 30 under 30 class. Listen to Three here.
