Ghana: TV3 launches new season of Mentor music reality show
Ghana's TV3 launched the 2020 edition of music reality show Mentor in Accra on 31 August.
The programme aims to discover and support gifted up-and-coming talents in the country and will reward the ultimate winner with a new car, two mastered songs and about $8 500 worth of airtime across the company’s TV, radio and digital platforms.
There will also be prizes for the first runner-up, who will take home about $1 700, one mastered song and $6 500 worth of airtime. The second runner-up will receive about $1 400, one mastered song and $5 000 worth of airtime, while the third runner-up will get about $900, one mastered song and $3 500 in airtime.
“Beyond offering a platform to discover extraordinary talents, we seek to add value and equip these young musicians with the requisite music business knowledge, industry insights and support to transform them into global stars,” Francis Doku, the general manager of TV3's parent company, Media General Ghana, said.
“Around the world, music is a multimillion-dollar industry and a major contributor to the GDP of countries. We at TV3 are convinced that when the right structures are built and activities within the creative arts sector streamlined, our music industry could potentially become a huge contributor to national development, hence our efforts in helping to identify, nurture and hone young talents to contribute to the industry”.
Auditions are slated for 1 and 2 September in Tamale, 4 and 5 September in Kumasi and 10 and 11 September in Takoradi. The final auditions are scheduled for Accra on 15 and 16 September. Rapper Edem, singer Adina, Musicians Union of Ghana president Bessa Simons and producer Appietus return as judges for the competition.
In September 2019, the competition, which had been put on hold after seven seasons, made a return, with Optional King emerging as the winner. His recent single 'Coronavirus' tackles the current health crisis.
