Producer R Kay is top royalties earner
Award-winning producer R Kay (Robert Kamanzi) is this year’s highest earner in the Broadcasting category for royalties paid out by the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK).
Although he is not a prominent performer, R Kay earned the top royalties for his role as composer and arranger for hits songs by top artistes like Nameless, Esther Wahome, Mbuvi, Habida and Sarah Kiarie.
According to MCSK CEO Maurice Okoth, top boy-band Sauti Sol would have been the highest royalty earners were it not for the fact that their money had to be split between the four band-members.
R Kay now replaces the late gospel star Angela Chibalonza at the top of the list. Coming third is another gospel star Gloria Muliro. The payments show that gospel music clearly dominates the top earners.
The payments are for the broadcasting logs received between July 1, 2013 and June, 30, 2014. A total of KSh. 31, 160, 538 was collected from the leading media stations, out of which Ksh. 28, 054, 147 was paid out to musicians.
