Nigerian singer Kiss Daniel to perform at Literary Evening
Each year since 2009 has seen the novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie teach a workshop on creative writing in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos. With musical performances added on, in recent times the colourful event bookending the 10-day Farafina Creative Writing Workshop has attracted attention for more than its literary inclinations.
Last year, rapper Phyno performed several hit singles at the Oriental Hotel, Lekki venue of the ‘Literary Evening’. This year, Kiss Daniels, famous for the hit song ‘Woju’, will be performing onstage after Adichie hands out certificates of workshop participation to attendees.
Since the September, 2014 release of ‘Woju’, Kiss Daniels has seen a rise in status, performing at various events even as the song has become a wedding staple in Nigeria. The Ogun-state born singer released follow-up single ‘Laye’ in May 2015.
This year’s Literary Evening will take place on Friday 26 June, and is set to feature a discussion by Adichie as well as by Kenyan-Ugandan writer Binyavanga Wainaina. The event is sponsored by Nigerian Breweries and organised by Farafina Trust.
‘The event which is open to the public, promises to be a thrilling experience for guests,’ a statement from the organisers said. Since inception, the workshop has trained over 100 would-be writers from various parts of Africa.
‘I am excited he’ll be performing,’ said Adaeze Ezenwa, one of the workshop’s participants. ‘He is the rave of the moment’.
