Call for entries: Indigenous gospel music competition in Johannesburg
The City of Johannesburg is calling on gospel groups and choirs to submit entries for a chance to perform the Indigenous Gospel Music Festival on 29 November.
The event, also known as Clap and Tap, is one of the regional activations linked to the 2020 Arts Alive programme.
Interested acts should submit their entries here.
The submission deadline is 24 October.
The winner will perform at the Indigenous Gospel Music Festival, and receive R15 000 and studio time, among other prizes.
Rules
- All participating choirs are subject to the rules of the festival.
- All choirs should look presentable on stage including their choir master/conductor.
- All selected choirs will be expected to attend choir information session and honour their obligated performance on the day.
- No choir will be paid using banking details different from those supplied or using the choir master’s/conductor’s personal details.
- Payments will be made in the name of the registered name to the festival.
- The organisers of the event reserve the right to disqualify any choir that fails to adhere to the rules as set.
- Only choirs from Johannesburg (regions A to G) should participate.
The regions are as follows:
- A – Diepsloot, Kya Sands, Dainfern, Midrand, Fourways and Lanseria.
- B – Randburg, Rosebank, Emmarentia, Greenside, Melville, Mayfair, Northcliff, Parktown and Parktown North.
- C – Roodepoort, Constantia Kloof, Northgate, Florida and Bram Fischerville.
- D – Doornkop, Soweto, Dobsonville and Protea Glen.
- E – Alexandra, Wynberg, Sandton, Orange Grove and Houghton.
- F – Inner City and Johannesburg South.
- G – Orange Farm, Weilers Farm, Ennerdale, Lenasia, Eldorado Park and Protea South.
How to enter
Step 1
- Record a video of the choir performing one song.
- Introduce the name of the choir and where it’s from.
- Video must be landscape, in MPEG4 format, of good quality and audio.
Step 2
- Log in here.
- Download and complete the registration form.
- Create a folder and put a video and the registration form inside a zip folder.
Step 3
- Click the submission box on the website.
- Upload your folder (zip file) and submit.
General guidelines
- A group should consist of not more than 20 people or less than 15 members.
- There is no age limit.
- The group should be based in Johannesburg.
- A group must not be signed to any recording company.
Assessment criteria
The judges will consider the following during assessment:
- Arrangement/composition.
- Presentation (music/personal).
- Improvisation/interpretation.
