All-female line-up for Uganda’s Qwela Junction November concert
An all-star female line-up is set to entertain loyal fans of the quarterly Qwela Junction concert series in a unique, high-quality live music showcase at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Sunday 29 November. The highly anticipated Qwela Junction concert, dubbed Divas Episode, will feature some of Uganda’s finest female vocalists, namely Sandra Suubi, Naava Grey, Solome Basuta, Jemimah Sanyu, Rita Sabiti, Racheal Magoola and MoRoots.
This will be the third edition of the Qwela Junction, which aims to appeal to lovers of jazz and Afro-fusion, genres not well catered for in Uganda. The show brings together audiences loyal to various artists in one place to share the jazz and Afro-fusion experience.
Naava Grey (aka Asha Naava Zziwa) first shot into the limelight after participating in the 2008 Tusker Project Fame talent search competition. With some of her earlier songs focussing on the subject of love, Naava puts time and creativity into her lyrics, handles her subject matter with memorable lyrics, pronounced originality and a powerful delivery that fuses rhyming skills, a bit of slang and an emotional outpour that’s easy to relate to. She recently collaborated with Nigeria's M.I on the remix of ‘Nteredde’.
Maureen Rutabingwa, popularly known as MoRoots, began singing in her school choir at the age of six. In August 2012, together with some members of Qwela Band, MoRoots formed Soul Deep, a band that plays soul, jazz and RnB music.
The first Qwela Junction, dubbed Guitar Maestros, debuted in April 2015 to great acclaim. The organizers then held a second edition, Sax Aces. Now with the Divas Episode the concerts are growing to become an established event for Afro-fusion and jazz enthusiasts in Kampala and surrounding areas to look out for.
