Black Coffee and Mbongwana Star to perform at Coachella in USA
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival returns to Indio in California, USA for two weekends in April (15-17 and 22-24). One of the largest, most famous, and most profitable music festivals in the United States, in 2015 Coachella sold 198 000 tickets and grossed $84.3 million - both world records. The festival recently unveiled its full 2016 lineup, with a few innovative African artists on the bill.
South African house DJ and producer Black Coffee will take to the stage on Fridays 15 April and 22 April. Still riding high on the success of his latest album Pieces of Me, the award-winning record producer recently confirmed in a tweet on 5 Jan: "@coachella - Let's go!". The booking is the latest in a string of global accolades for the producer, who in 2014 embarked on an epic world tour. In October 2015 he was named winner of the Breakthrough category at the prestigious DJ Awards in the global party mecca of Ibiza in Spain, also accepting on behalf of his country South Africa’s award for Dance Nation Of The Year.
Black Coffee will be joined by Kinshasa’s Mbongwana Star, made up of Coco Yakala Ngambali, Théo Nsituvuidi Nzonza, Randy Makana Kalambayi, Jean Claude Kamina Mulodi (aka R9), Matuzolele Rodrick and Doctor L. Signed to the London-based label World Circuit, the band’s 2015 debut album, From Kinshasa, has received universal acclaim from international critics.
Joining them are another Afrocentric act in the form of French-Cuban twin sisters Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé Ibeyi, who sing in English and Yoruba, the Nigerian language of their ancestors. Both acts will also be performing on Fridays 15 and 22 April.
Also on the bill is Mercury Prize-winning Scottish/Liberian/Nigerian trio Young Fathers, who in early 2015 performed in South Africa and later in the year at Malawi’s Lake Of Stars festival. They will perform at Coachella on Sundays 17 and 24 April.
Most of the media hype surrounding this year’s Coachella festival concerns the fact that this year's edition will host highly anticipated reunion gigs for American bands Guns N’ Roses and LCD Soundsystem. For more details, visit the Coachella website.
