
Call for entries: I Am Starlet music competition in Zambia
Toyota Zambia, in association with the Zambian Association of Musicians (ZAM), is calling on aspiring musicians to submit entries for its inaugural I Am Starlet music competition.
- Zambian singer Mampi is among the judges of the music competition.
I Am Starlet seeks to promote Zambian music and support young artists in their quest to become stars.
The winners will be awarded as follows:
- Winner – ZMW100 000 ($4 700)
- First runner-up – ZMW50 000
- Second runner-up – ZMW25 000
Terms and conditions
Professional musicians are not eligible to take part in the competition. A professional musician is defined as:
- A musician who has had at least one or more songs commercially released to radio, online streaming services (excluding blogs) and TV.
- A musician who has been nominated for any local or national award.
- A musician who has been earning revenue through live performances for a period longer than five years.

The competition will be conducted in two online phases and the final live event. The online phases will be promoted and conducted via the Toyota Zambia Facebook page and the Toyota Zambia official website. The final phase will be a live event streamed via the Toyota Zambia Facebook page. In the online phases, competitors are required to make a video recording and submit it to Toyota Zambia, as per the terms and conditions of the competition, for evaluation and further processing.
First phase
- The first phase began on 27 January and requires entrants to apply by filling up the form at the bottom of this page.
- Participants will receive a WhatsApp message from Toyota Zambia and/or website contact address, where they should send a video recording of themselves singing a Zambian song.
- Only competitors who filled the form and accepted the terms and conditions are eligible to participate in the competition.
The submission deadline is 10 February.
How to record a video
- Entrants can use a phone camera or film camera to record a video.
- The recording should be between one and three minutes long.
- Videos that are more than three minutes will not be accepted.
- Videos can be submitted via WhatsApp or email (to be provided).
- Only videos with Zambian songs will be accepted.
Selection process
The performance videos will go through a selection process, which comprises the following Zambian creatives: Tivo, Mampi and Pompi. The process will be held from 15 to 18 February, where the top 50 videos will be selected to remain in the competition. The selected 50 videos will be approved and framed (Toyota I am Starlet) by Toyota Zambia and then returned to the competitors on 18 February.
Voting
Voting will be done via competitors’ Facebook pages/accounts from 19 to 24 February. Competitors will be assigned to share the videos on their Facebook pages/accounts and invite friends and followers to vote for them by liking the performance posts. Only 25 competitors will be chosen to proceed to Phase 2 of the competition. The 25 shortlisted competitors will be posted on it’s the Toyota Zambia Facebook page.
Second phase
- The shortlisted competitors will be invited to record new performances and submit via WhatsApp before 5 March.
- The videos will be posted on the Toyota Zambia website where all the fans and followers will have the chance to vote for their favourite artists.
- Voting starts from 6 until 12 March and only ten entrants will be shortlisted. The shortlisted entrants will be announced on 12 March via the Toyota Zambia Facebook page.
Awards ceremony
- The winner of the talent competition will be chosen from the ten finalists at the Toyota Zambia showroom live event in Lusaka on 25 March.
- The winner will be chosen on the bases of the performance video at a live event.
