They have shared the stage with renowned musician Shakira at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and popular local band Freshlyground for the performance of the official World Cup song ‘WakaWaka’ at the Kick-Off Concert and the World Cup Final.
This will be the second time that Celtic Woman will perform in South Africa. In September and October 2012, they were in the country to performed in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Founded in 2004, the ensemble is made up of four female vocalists, namely Chloë Agnew, Lisa Lambe, Celtic violinist Máiréad Nesbitt and Susan McFadden. They have reportedly sold more than eight million copies of their nine CDs and eight DVDs. Their popularity outside Ireland and Europe was enhanced through the success of artists such as Enya, Moya Brennan and Clannad. Their music is a fusion of traditional Irish folk music and modern contemporary music; their live shows also boast major stage production. It has been more than ten years since Celtic Woman first captured America’s imagination with their self-titled first public television special. That historic concert performance launched a genuine cultural phenomenon, introducing millions of new fans to the group’s fresh fusion of traditional Irish music, contemporary studio craft and state-of-the-art stage production
Having been named Billboard magazine’s World Album Artist of the Year six times, the group is a one-of-a-kind musical entity that showcases gifted young Irish women: world-class vocalists and a brilliant Celtic violinist, whose talent and charisma help to bring centuries of musical and cultural tradition to vibrant life in the group’s recordings and concert performances. Singing songs of love, loss, hope and inspiration, Celtic Woman has transcended national and cultural boundaries to celebrate the timeless emotion of Ireland’s centuries-old heritage, extending those vibrant musical traditions into the present day.
Their upcoming South African show during the Destiny tour will see them performing timeless traditional Irish songs such as ‘Bean Pháidín’ and ‘Siúil A Run’ alongside new songs such as ‘Walk Beside Me’ and ‘The Whole of The Moon’. The show will feature re-imagined renditions of audience favourites ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘You Raise Me Up’.
