Their musical style blends elements of traditional South African music with pop and jazz. The current line-up is drummer Peter Cohen, guitarist Julio 'Gugs' Sigauque, Josh Hawks on bass, Seredeal 'Shaggy' Scheepers on keyboards and percussion, violinist Kyla-Rose Smith and Simon Attwell (flute, mbira, sax and harmonica). They have released five albums to date: 'Jika Jika' (2003), 'Nomvula' (2004), 'Ma' Cheri' (2007), 'Radio Africa' (2010) and 'Take Me To The Dance' (2012).
In 2008, they picked up three SAMAs: best duo/group, Album Of The Year, Best Adult Contemporary Album: English, and Best Engineer. At the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards in Copenhagen, Freshlyground became the first South African musical act to win the award for Best African Act. At the 2008 Channel O Music Video Awards, the band received the Best Africa: Southern accolade for their single 'Pot Belly'. They received further international attention when they recorded ‘Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)’ with Colombian superstar Shakira for the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa.
