Ghana’s M.anifest to direct music for Chimamanda Adichie film
Ghanaian rapper M.anifest has been appointed music director for an upcoming film.
The film is based on a short story by the Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. A writer mostly known for her novels, she is also a short story writer and has contributed opinion essays to publications around the world. Her speech, ‘We Should all be Feminists” was used in ‘Flawless’, a song by American popstar Beyonce.
M.anifest will be directing the music to be used for the cinematic adaptation of the story ‘On Monday of Last Week’. The story is taken from ‘That Thing Around Your Neck’, a collection of short stories released in the US in 2009.
The story follows a Nigerian woman who moves to the US and becomes nanny for an American family. She later becomes obsessed with the matriarch of the new family. The film is directed by M.anifest’s fellow Ghanaian, the director Adoma Akosua Owusu. Adichie’s novel ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ has also been adapted for screen. Directed by Biyi Bandele, the film was released in 2013.
M.anifest took the news of his role on the upcoming film to social media. “Chimamanda Adichie's short story, ‘On Monday of Last Week’ is being turned into a film,” he wrote on Facebook, “and I'm happy to announce I'm the music supervisor for the film.”
The rapper was recently featured in ‘The Greatest’, a song by Nigerian DJ Jimmy Jatt. The song also features Femi Kuti, Mode 9, and Navio.
