One Africa Music Fest goes to UK in May
Following sold-out shows at New York’s Barclays Centre and Houston’s Toyota Centre, One Africa Music Festival will now debut in the UK at the SSE Arena, Wembley on 13 May.
The London show is projected to be the biggest Afrobeats event in Europe. It will feature a line-up of artists from the African continent that includes Tiwa Savage (Nigeria), P-Square (Nigeria), Davido (Nigeria), Ali Kiba (Tanzania), Tekno (Nigeria), Awilo Logomba (Congo) and Cassper Nyovest (South Africa) among others.
The show will be hosted by Nigerian singer Banky W. Capital Xtra’s Abrantee Boateng is the event's official DJ.
DJ Abrantee is often credited with coining the term 'Afrobeats' to describe contemporary pop music coming from Africa – Nigeria and Ghana in particular – by adding the letter 's' to Afrobeat, the name of the music genre created and performed by Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
The US version of One Africa Music Fest featured performances by Wizkid, D'banj, Jidenna, Flavour and Seun Kuti and was streamed live on Tidal and supported by Hot 97 radio.
“It’s imperative that we continue to show the world what the continent of Africa is truly about," the CEO of event organiser Upfront and Personal Global Management Consultants (UPGMC), Paul Okoye, said. "The Afrobeats extravaganza is taken to the UK by UPGMC and the vision for it is stated thus: We are pioneers in the musical sounds and styles that the commercial industry are now sampling and it’s fantastic that we can finally exhibit this on a global scale.”
