African singers confirmed for White Stick Fest
Nigerian musician Cobhams Asuquo and South African artist Vernon Barnard are among the blind and low-vision performers confirmed for the inaugural White Stick Fest on 15 October.
Other performers on the line-up include Michael Leonardi, Rachael Leahcar, and Lara Nakhle (Australia), The X Ambassadors and Diane Schuur and the Airmen of Note (US), and Andrea Begley (Northern Ireland).
The digital show was put together by Platinum Cre8ive and Vision Australia Radio, and is in commemoration of International White Cane Day. The programme seeks to support awareness and celebrate the achievements of blind and low vision community members.
An accomplished singer-songwriter and producer, Asuquo is behind popular local hits including ‘Boosit’ featuring rapper Falz, ‘Stronger Than Before’, ‘Ordinary People’ and ‘We Plenti’ featuring Simi. Formerly signed with Sony/ATV UK, Asuquo has been associated with esteemed colleagues including Asa, Banky W, Bez, Omawumi and Waje, among others. The musician is also a UN ambassador for peace.
Barnard rose to fame on season 2 of The Voice: South Africa, after which he inked a deal with Universal Music SA. He is behind the singles ‘I Like It That Way’, ‘Daai Liedjie’ and ‘Voel’.
“The power of White Stick Fest is our ability to connect high-calibre artists with communities all over the world,” Platinum Cre8ive owner and founder Duncan Steward said. “We are trying to make White Stick Fest as accessible and inclusive as possible, delivering world-class performances right to your device.”
The organisers say the show will also feature performances from musicians who are not visually impaired, including Magic Giant, The Wiggles, Rick Price, Joan Belgrave, and Georgia and the Vintage Youth.
The event will be broadcast on the White Stick Fest's official website.
