WatsUp TV expands to Sierra Leone
Pan-African digital entertainment channel WatsUp TV this week announced that it was expanding its operations to Sierra Leone.
- WatsUp TV CEO Abd Traore and Sierra Leone country rep Mohammed Basiru.
Founded by Guinean entertainment entrepreneur and CEO Abd Traore in 2014, the Ghanaian TV platform is also behind the WatsUp TV Africa Music Video Awards as well as the WatsUp Magazine, which regularly features African artists.
The company has grown to become a fully-fledged 24-hour TV channel, with offices in Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Guinea. The channel is available across the continent via its satellite platform and Canal+.
WatsUp TV has also appointed Mohammed Basiru as the country rep for Sierra Leone. Basiru will head WatsUp TV operations in the country, leading a team to “create entertainment content for both local and international consumption,” according to a press release.
Accepting his new role, Basiru promised to “build a solid brand for WatsUp TV in Sierra Leone and also use it to promote the positive image of the country and its talents”.
The company said that the move is in line with its plans to grow its presence on the continent.
Earlier this year, WatsUp TV completed a deal with Sony Music West Africa (SMWA) as part of efforts to promote artists in the subregion.
“A key component of our operations as a music company is storytelling and we are confident in WatsUp TV’s ability to help us achieve this objective by reason of their influential status in pan-African entertainment and the many products and networks they have established to support the function of informing audiences far and wide,” SMWA head of public relations Jim Donnett said.
