Ghana: DSL wins Mentor X music reality show
Emerging reggae/dancehall artist DSL was named the winner of the 10th edition of TV3’s Mentor music reality show, which came off at the National Theatre in Accra, Ghana on 9 January.
Dubbed Mentor X, this season of the competition, like previous versions, offers a springboard for undiscovered local talents to advance their professional careers, according to organisers. It ran for 13 weeks.
Born Lawrence Senyo Adiase, the 24-year-old singer bested fellow finalists Konfidential, AJ, Ely and Wise B to annex the title, which was previously held by rapper Kweku Bany. DSL took home a prize package including a recording contract with Richie Mensah’s Lynx Entertainment, a brand new vehicle, over GH₵100 000 (about $16 200) worth of promotional airtime, and international television promotion Trace TV among others.
Konfidential came second, winning a cash prize of GH₵ 8 000, a distribution deal for a single, as well as a marketing and promotion package with Trace TV.
Second runner-up AJ walked away with GH₵ 6 000 among other consolation prizes.
The final episode of the season saw guest performances from leading Ghanaian singers including Cina Soul and Epixode, as well as Kweku Bany. Hiplife founder Reggie Rockstone, Richie Mensah, Adina Thembi and Kwabena Kwabena served as the judges for the show.
“By participating in a well-structured reality show like Mentor, young talents get to mingle with a lot of people, and this helps them to change and develop their basic characteristics,” Media General TV general manager Francis Doku had said at the start of this season. “In addition to helping work on their craft, they learn the rudiments of the trade.”
On the night of the finale, Media General TV COO Winfred Kingsley Afful admonished the finalists to put the grooming they have received throughout the competition to full use as they take on new frontiers of their careers.
