Nigeria: Apple Music, Spotify and Deezer data added to TurnTable Charts
Nigeria-based music chart publication TurnTable Charts (TTC) has announced that data from major digital streaming portals including Apple Music, Deezer and Spotify will be counted in its local music charts.
TTC was co-founded by Ayomide Oriowo and Adegoke Similoluwa in July 2020 to provide standard charts of the biggest releases in the country.
The news, which was confirmed by Oriowo on Wednesday, arrives two years after the magazine launched what is believed to be Nigeria’s first-ever standard aggregate music chart. It also follows a direct partnership with music streaming service Boomplay last year, in an arrangement that sees Boomplay share data on the most streamed songs in Nigeria with TTC, to expand its flagship chart TurnTable Top 50.
“We’ve been able to create from scratch a credible music charting system that several leading and reputable music organisations in and outside Nigeria are willing to work with and share data for music charts,” Oriowo said. “This marks a new age for music data, aggregation and documentation in Nigeria.”
TTC is behind five weekly charts, namely, TurnTable Top 50, TurnTable Top 50 Airplay, TurnTable TV Top songs, Top 50 Streaming Songs and Top Triller Chart Nigeria, as well as the annual TurnTable End of the Year Top 50.
The addition of Apple Music, Deezer and Spotify data follows partnerships with notable tastemakers and organisations such as Radiomonitor, Triller and City FM among others. It will augment current data sources comprising sales, airplay and streaming, improve the data points used for TTC's charts and provide better platform-specific analytics and reports.
Last month, TTC announced a partnership with media production company Zikoko to curate content tailored towards Nigerian youth through music and music data. TTC is also collaborating with local news website Pulse Nigeria on a weekly-format coverage of the top ten songs in the country while offering a deep dive into the numbers behind the charts.
