Ethiopia: Anis Gabi releases Haadha Milkii single
Upcoming Ethiopian musician Anis Gabi has released a new single titled ‘Haadha Milkii’.
The song, which explores the place of women in society, was arranged by the well-known saxophonist Jorga Mesfin, who worked with Ethio-jazz and West African sounds to create a unique melody that harks back to greats like Ali Birra and Mahmoud Ahmed. Other musicians who participated in the production are Lencho Gemechu, Henok Temesgen and Tewodros Aklilu.
The song tells the story of a woman married to an abusive partner. She is later rescued by the Siinqee system. Siinqee is a stick that a woman receives on her wedding day. It has come to symbolise a socially sanctioned set of rights exercised by women in the Oromo community.
The video for the song features the sweeping vistas in Oromia as well as the elaborate dress code and rich cultural heritage of the people in the region.
Anis Gabi, who signed his first major music deal with Ethiopian record label Muzikawi in April, is the son of renowned Oromo singer Gabi Edao. ‘Haadha Milkii’ is his debut release on the label.
The singer is known for his appearances in Ethiopian singing competitions where has performed covers of well-known Oromo songs. He holds a master’s degree in music and has worked as a music teacher.
