Prince Claus Fund announces 2022 Seed Award recipients
The Prince Claus Fund in the Netherlands has announced the recipients of the 2022 Seed Award programme.
The announcement follows a call for application designed for emerging artists and cultural practitioners. The fund annually recognises 100 emerging artists and cultural practitioners within the first five years of their careers with Prince Claus Seed Awards.
The three categories of Prince Claus Awards – Seed, Mentorship and Impact – are designed to support artists and cultural practitioners in different ways at crucial stages in their professional careers. Prince Claus Seed Awards offer an early career boost that can make a difference in the long run.
The recipients were selected from over 1 500 applicants, with this year’s recipients drawn from more than 70 countries, extending from Latin America and the Caribbean to Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. Their work covers a wide range of disciplines and addresses a diversity of social concerns, from gender equality, racial justice and indigenous rights to freedom of expression and the impacts of climate change.
The fund facilitates beneficial connections and exchanges for recipients and they are free to use the €5 000 award at their own discretion to further their practice. Some of the African recipients include Anawana Haloba (Zambia), Alice Penda (Cameroon), Mohamed Sirra (Morocco), Hana Tefrati (Morocco), Doaa Nasr (Egypt), Kins of Spade (Kenya), Ling Sheperd (South Africa), Delasi Nunana (Ghana) Russel Hlongwane (South Africa) and Jared Onyango (Kenya).
“For culture to thrive, new artists need a chance to break through barriers, experiment, find their path and gain momentum,” Prince Claus Fund said. “We are proud to announce a selection of future trendsetters, a hundred artists to follow. We are excited to announce 100 Prince Claus Seed Awards recipients – inspiring new artists and cultural practitioners whose work addresses pressing issues in their local communities.”
